Jason & Jessica’s Engagement

Spring has sprung, It’s time to get to Red Rocks! I have been photographing in and around Red Rocks park outside of Morrison, Colorado for 8+ years now. I always try to create something new and fresh when photographing in a familiar location. This gets to be more and more of a challenge than going somewhere new. Getting a new and exciting image is what this is all about for me. Pushing creativity to the next level is my goal in work and play.

Jason and Jessica have a fun, easygoing and adventurous personality. I partially joked that they were getting a workout from all the things we were doing. I can say I was, I climbed to the top of the boulders creating a cave to create an image that I an really proud of. I’d rate the climb at least 5.8 and a bit dicy in my running shoes with a $8000 camera hanging from my shoulder.

We had a great afternoon in Red Rocks, I am really looking forward to this summer and all the great images and new places I will photograph. Coming up soon is Jason and Jessica’s wedding at the top of Keystone. That will be another great day I am really looking forward to!

A sea of red rock, I call this spot the wave. It is one of my favorites at Red Rocks.

In this image I really love the layering and how Jason and Jessica become part of the landscape with lots of depth and color!

The Cave, this is new as I have never photographed in this cave before. I really like it and hope to find dozens of more angles on this spot.

180 days in Jail and $999 fine for climbing rocks at Red Rocks. Isn't this a bit excessive for climbing a rock? I had to get this image, sometimes bending the rules for a great shot is a compromise I am willing to make. I love the colors and composition of this image.

Love and swirly backgrounds....

I really liked the form from the silhouette of the Yucca plant. Then adding Jason and Jessica in a quiet moment really made this image for me. A great ending image for their book.

Alan & Robin’s Oklahoma City wedding

It is always great to go back to my home town of Oklahoma City to see family, friends and shoot a fun wedding. This trip was just that. It was Alan and Robin’s wedding that I had the pleasure of photographing. Alan and I met on a climbing trip together at Joshua Tree National Park in California. It was a great trip and I had fun photographing him climbing there as well. I was shooting film then so that tells you how long ago that was….

It was the perfect day, with clouds but no rain. This is not what brides typically hope for but it is a photographers hall pass to create images in places that would normally be off limits during the harsh mid day sun. The wedding was held at the beautiful Will Rogers Park in the Rose Garden. The roses were in an early full bloom from the warm spring making the perfect setting for this outdoor wedding.

To get the sweet fruit sometime you have to climb a tree. A behind the scenes look at the lengths I go to get a shot.

This is the fruit of my tree climbing!

Out of the dozens of weddings we have photographed at the Chapel at Red Rocks here is a glimpse of what it has to offer.

Alan & Molly- A Mountain Wedding in Vail

We had a great time photographing Alan and Molly’s Wedding last night in Vail. It was great to see so many familiar faces amongst the guests. Alan and Molly live in Hawaii currently but both lived in Colorado before trading the snow for sand.  Everything just went so well. We missed the short rain between the time I photographed Alan & Molly together alone and the ceremony. It was the perfect early fall day in the mountains, not hot, not cold but just right.

We started the day photographing in Vail Village at the covered bridge. All of Vail Village was buzzing with the weekly farmers market. We took this in stride and went to work to create uniquely vail images with Gore creek and the covered bridge. Then we were off to Donovan  Pavilion for the ceremony and reception. This is a great venue for a wedding, with a beautiful back patio for the outdoor ceremony and a spacious interior for the reception. During the ceremony surrounded by Aspen trees you could hear the trickle of Gore creek running in the background.

A really fun reception followed the ceremony with Alan’s Mom performing a Hula dance accompanied by  their friends playing Hawaiian slack key guitars. The night ended with Alan and Molly leaving with all the friends and family waiving sparklers as they left Donovan Pavilion.

Alan and Molly are off for two weeks honeymoon in Australia before returning to paradise in Hawaii.

I really like this image for the glowing nature of the light. This was a real moment as she was finishing getting ready.

Molly was a beautiful bride with a very natural and graceful presence. I was really drawn to the quality of the light coming in the window as she was getting ready. This is right before she went to meet Alan for the first encounter.

This is the first Encounter (when they saw each other for the first time on the wedding day), They both were nervous (that is normal) as we brought them together with Alan turned facing away. Then 1-2-3 turnaround and this is what happened next. Love the energy!

Vail is a great place to have a wedding. That is the covered bridge in the background.

A quiet moment. They think I am messing with my camera but I didn’t want to interrupt this moment. I just captured it as is. Many times that is best.

This is the classic covered bridge in Vail Village. Many thanks to the 40ish people waiting for us to get this image that were out of sight on both ends of the bridge. I love the depth and quality of light in this image.

Each time I photograph I really try to do something new that I have never done before. In new and familiar locations this is my challenge to myself. This is where many of the images I am excited about come from. This is one of those images, I see the power of symbolism as they walk into there new life together going from the dark into the light.

This was funny! I don't know if anyone noticed this but me. A flower girl getting a little gloss during the ceremony. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...

A happy couple taking in there guests during the ceremony. I thought this was a nice touch by having them turn around and let them and their guests see them. So many ceremonies all the guests see it the back of the couple. Nice touch Eugene!

This might be my favorite image from the day. I LOVE brides that are willing to get in rivers barefoot in their wedding dresses. Classically colorado!

Jonathan & Courtney’s - The Perfect Denver Wedding.

We had a great time today with Jonathan and Courtney!  I photographed Jonathan’s sister’s wedding two years ago, and it was so nice to see all the familiar family members again. We covered a lot of ground in the course of the day. We started with the first encounter in a rose garden near downtown Littleton, not far from their home. We met a nervous Jonathan there and called for Courtney once we were ready and in position. Jonathan could barely take the anticipation. I gave him a pre-first encounter pep talk and he did great. It was a really sweet and loving first encounter and I am so glad that they were able to take their time and enjoy it without being in front of all their family and guests during the wedding ceremony. We then spent some time shooting with the two of them around old town Littleton. I love the reactions we got from passers by on the street. It seems they would help us in any way to get a great shot. Then off to the family group portraits - we had this knocked out in 15 minutes and were on to Three Trees Wedding Chapel for the ceremony. This was the second wedding we have done at Three Trees and it is a great chapel. The light quality inside this chapel is really nice. After the ceremony we went on to Terrace Gardens another venue we have only been to once before. The staff there was a pleasure to work with as well. Amazing food and yummy cake made the night.

Jonathan and Courtney are a couple that my camera just loves to photograph. I mean they look so great together, and even when they are nervous they still look great and powerful images just come naturally. I have really enjoyed working with this family as a whole. Who’s next?

Here are some of my favorites. They are also on Facebook, Let’s become Facebook friends if we are not already. http://www.facebook.com/peter.holcombe

The First Encounter! This is THE moment of the day. It all broke loose in an amazing emotional interaction.

20090929_brown-oltman_wedd-118-facebook

This is fun! I like the texture of the wall and the quality of light was great. There were 4-6 ladies in the hair salon window camera right providing the entertainment..

20090929_brown-oltman_wedd-122-facebook

This is one of my top three for the year. I love how graphic this image is while still being emotionally charged. This is a very unlikely spot to create this as it is an entrance to a parking garage. This just proves that great images can be created anywhere.

20090929_brown-oltman_wedd-145-facebook

Fun, Fun, Fun. Judging from Courtney's reaction this might be the first time Jonathan has bitten her ear. It's a good look for them!

20090929_brown-oltman_wedd-169-facebook

Some couples can do the swing while others just look like penguins trying to fly. Jonathan and Courtney were naturals at this. They went around a bunch of times. I was impressed. They must have practiced this?!?

Crawling through the forest under logs and through dense foliage with an angry swarm of mosquitoes attacking in my left ear....... I love this image! It was worth it!

20090929_brown-oltman_wedd-210-facebook

This was a moment when I was setting up for the family groups. I’m not sure if they even knew I was photographing them or just setting up. They look so in Love!!! I really like the texture on the ground and the tones in the sky. Great sense of place.

The first dance. This is alway a great moment in the course of a wedding day. I had to create this light for this image, as the room lights just weren't doing it. This is part of the fun in being a wedding photographer, taking a room with ho hum lighting and making it mine.
