498 days of Jaffe Family portraits!

It was 498 days ago today when I first met the Jaffe family to discuss creating a series of wall portraits for their new home. We began this project with a consultation in their home where we decided to do a shoot for each child featuring them in a unique location that illustrated their individual interests and character. Because each session was custom designed for the seven family members, we knew that it would take some time to complete this project. We began the fall of 2008 with Brianna and then had to wait for summer for Caleb to be photographed playing golf, Mariah and her contagious energy, Dani and her kitty, and finally fall for the eldest son Steve and family portrait of everyone - six sessions total. It has been a wonderful journey with the entire family, spending individual time with each person and then watching them interact together as a family.

In the process we have created 10 beautiful pieces for the wall for their new home and fun holiday cards.  It seemed so natural that we compile the remaining images into a book. I am really happy with how the book has ended up. It has a different chapter for each child and is made in our organic series with a beautiful zebra wood cover. I am so happy to create this book as I know it is going to become a treasured family heirloom. These books gain in value as time passes and life goes on. I hope to be able to capture their family history from now on with this project being the start of many great holiday cards and family history books.

Shine; The Big Party! Disabled community is guests of honor!

I had the honor of photographing with a great team of volunteers for the Shine Event at Flatirons Community Church. A prom for people from across the Denver metro area who have developmental, physical or mental disabilities, along with their caregivers. It was amazing to see these people light up when I pointed my camera at them, They truly Shined! We shot thousands of images and gave free prints to everyone. The printer was buzzing out 5×7s at an astonishing speed and I just kept firing off fun portraits.  All the 20+ photographers donated their time along with hundreds of other volunteers to make this event happen. It feels so good to see the effect photography can have on a single person! This was most likely one of the greatest nights I have ever spent photographing.

Here is a recap video from this amazing night!

Here is an interesting article I stumbled across. It is written from the perspective of the amateur photographer covering a wedding alongside a working pro. This is very good for insight if you are thinking about skimping on one of the biggest days of your life.

Wes & Lauri Lea-Winter wedding at the Chapel at Red Rocks

I am just back from Wes and Lauri Lea’s wedding and It’s official. Yes, that was the last wedding of 2009. What a great way to end a great year. It was really nice to capture their wedding ceremony at The Chapel at Red Rocks. Red Rocks is magical in the winter  with snow on the rocks and the clear cold days make the rocks seem even larger and vibrant than normal. We then went to The Golden Hotel for the reception, thanks to Melissa for all the hospitality. The Golden Hotel is a gem nestled on the banks of Clear Creek in downtown Golden. The nice thing about a morning wedding ceremony is after the ceremony we still have some of the best natural light of the day to use and not another commitment. We went to Lodo in Denver to capture some fun images of Wes and Lauri Lea alone. We covered a lot of  ground even though it was getting really cold (mid 20s). As the last wedding of 2009 I can’t ask for a better year or better clients. Much thanks to Wes and Lauri Lea for allowing us to capture their amazing wedding day in Colorado and engagement in Memphis, TN.

We wish you the best!

Rings.... Thanks Heater! It is hard to make a creative ring portrait. I feel good about this one. Something different!

This is a fun spot that Wes and Lauri requested specifically. I put a different spin on it this time. This feels more like Brooklyn than Denver to me. Love it!

What is a trip to Lodo without a Union Station portrait?

Depth, color and emotion. Did I mention December brides are TUFF.... I am in a down jacket, hat and gloves.

I try to always push myself creatively. This is an image I created for myself just to push onward. I hope you like it as well.
