We’re not in Kansas anymore; Billy & Moriah’s Colorado Mountain Wedding

We had a great time photographing Billy and Moriah. The wedding was at a new venue for us “Baxter’s on the Creek” in Idaho Springs. It was really beautiful with an intimate ceremony spot nestled in a grove of blue spruce with a creek alongside. I felt like I was deep in a forest with a river running though just behind where the guests were seated. I loved the gurgle of the creek as a soundtrack to the wedding. The reception followed in a great big tent.  Tents are a great way to make the outdoors comfortable, and I love the way my lights bounce around inside making for some of the best reception lighting anywhere.

Clouds but no rain, just the way I like it, making for nice cool temps - a rare treat in August. Billy and Moriah are from Kansas and nearly all their guests were from out of town. It was a great destination wedding as many of the guests commented on how much fun they were having in Colorado.

Justin and Angela’s Colorado Mountain Wedding

Justin and Angela are one of the nicest couples ever! They have a genteel Southern charm and grace having just moved from Atlanta to Colorado last month. They also seem to have a knack for making it rain. We shot their engagement session mostly in the rain and Kathy and I joked with them when we first met on their wedding day because it was raining again. They are so easy going they just rolled with it and we shot using umbrellas. Angela was amazing, she was having fun out in the rain on her wedding day before her ceremony. We shot on top of a mountain walking forest paths in the light rain. The forest had a soft glow that can only be found in a summer thunder storm. They are just so easy going and adventurous, we were there to create powerful images and that is just what we did.

Their wedding and reception was held at Mount Vernon Country Club. Before the outdoor wedding was to begin the rain subsided and the sky cleared. The light was really nice and soft with the wedding beginning about an hour before sunset. Everything was just how I’d hoped it would be. Some days everything just clicks, and today was one of those days and my camera was happily clicking away……

William and Colleen’s Genesee Mountain Wedding

William and Colleen had a great day for an outdoor wedding in the Colorado mountains. They took their wedding location a step further than using one of the many great venues that supply a outdoor wedding in an amazing place. They wanted a mountain wedding in a public place that they could return to on anniversaries and spend as much time in this special place as they liked. This place had to have a view of the mountains and be relatively close to their home in Golden. After much research and driving around, they discovered Genessee Mountain Park. There was a large meadow with two giant pines which provided the perfect setting for their nuptials, and it was a place they could revisit as often as they liked. I have often thought about all the amazing places in Colorado and how with a little creativity you could do a wedding in many of these gorgeous locations. It would take an adventurous couple to plan a wedding in one of our favorite remote locations, but we seem to have no shortage of those at Holcombe Photography.

Colleen and William’s day went off without a hitch. They brought in chairs, flowers, a string quartet, and a PA system so all the guests could hear the ceremony. We had great weather, sunny with puffy clouds dancing overhead. The center aisle was positioned to point west so as the guests looked to Colleen walking down the aisle they saw her with the mountains looming behind. I was so happy with how this all worked out as it was really striking and the guests loved it.

We went to the nearby Mount Vernon Country Club for the reception with 5 star service and amazing food. During the course of the reception I noticed all the guests looking out the large windows looking over the mountains above Denver. The view is amazing but out of the dozens of weddings I had shot here I’d never seen the guests so excited over the view. I go up to see what everyone is looking at and I saw a black bear sitting at the edge of the trees below the deck. He seemed very content almost like he was coming as a guest to wish William and Colleen the best on their wedding day. He hung around for 20-30 minutes before lumbering off into the woods. I have seen quite a few bears in Colorado but never at a wedding reception. We joked that this is one on the many things only Mount Vernon could provide. Someone asked William how he arranged the bear to make an appearance and he replayed “I do have a degree in wildlife management and work for The Nature Conservancy.”

Thanks Colleen and William for allowing us to photograph your fabulous Colorado mountain wedding!

Bart and Patty’s Evergreen Wedding

Bart and Patty had their perfect wedding celebration in Evergreen, Colorado. We started at the Highland Haven where they and all their family was staying. This is a little gem of a spot on the outskirts of downtown Evergreen on the banks of Bear Creek. The creek is a major attraction to Bart and Patty since they are kayakers. You might have seen my blog post about Bart and Patty’s Colorado River engagement shoot back in March. After some time getting ready, we photographed around the Highland Haven and then worked our way over to the Evergreen Lake House. This is a very cool log building that sits right on the bank of Evergreen Lake with a large outside deck perfect for a wedding celebration with a mountain feel. The ceremony went off with out a hitch, the deck even went into shade 5 minutes before the start making for cool guests and was easy on the bride and grooms eyes. At one point I realized that this was not your ordinary wedding when I started to notice all the water proof Cameras that the guests were sporting. I’d bet over half of this group were rafters or kayakers and a non water proof camera means a short life in the hands of this group.

A great party ensued complete with a live band and a wedding cake that looked like a river with a class IV rapid complete with rocks, waves and his and her kayaker action figures. It was a really fun day and I thank Bart and Patty for letting me be a part of it all!

The following Saturday they had all the guests meet them on the Arkansas river for a trip down Brown’s Canyon. 37 kayakers and 5 full rafts made for a floating celebrations that won’t soon be forgotten!

I wish you both the best and look forward to seeing you on the river soon!

Jason and Jessica’s Top of Keystone Wedding at Alpenglow Stube

Kathy and I have really had a great time working with Jason and Jessica. They are a fun couple that share our love for the mountains and adventure. We were so excited to have the opportunity to shoot their wedding at Alpenglow Stube on the top of Keystone Resort. The Alpenglow Stube is accessed through two gondola rides to the backside of Keystone. It was a gorgeous setting for a truly Colorado mountain wedding with food and service was 2nd to none.

Jason and Jessica have such a strong connection to Keystone. They spend alot of time skiing there in the winter and mountain biking in the summer.  They know the runs and trails very well. As I rode the gondola up with Jessica she pointed out many of their favorites and had a great story to tell as we crested every rise.

I think this is one important aspect to making a great wedding day. Having the wedding in a place that you truly feel alive. The place that you are the most relaxed and happy  makes for a great wedding location. Jason and Jessica did just that and what a great wedding day they had! Enjoy the Wedding Day Storybook below. It was a pleasure to create!
