A Snowy Winter Downtown Denver Family Portrait: The Bridges Family

We have had a very mild winter this year in Colorado. I’m still shooting family portraits in many of my favorite locations in which is very unusual for this time of year and really a nice surprise. The Bridges family gathered together in Denver for Christmas for the first time in years. The children have all moved away and this was going to be a special Christmas and a wonderful opportunity for a family portrait. We scheduled the session months in advance and hoped for the best.  A short and busy window with everyone together didn’t allow for  the shoot to be rescheduled if we had inclement weather. I have found that when the pressure is on for a one window of opportunity to shoot the unlikely can become not only possible, but great. This was just the case with the Bridges family.  The day came and it was 19 degrees and the worst snow storm of the season. If we had the opportunity to reschedule I would have done so, but because of schedule constraints, that was simply not an option. Arriving early to set up before they arrived I found just what I’d feared. It was not just snowing, but really pounding snow and the streets were a sheet of ice.

This is a time when I have to remind myself that this is an amazing and unique opportunity to capture something out of the ordinary. After this shift of mind I saw this cold snowy urban world as a new canvas for  me to create something new and interesting. Luckily they were all very willing to play in the snow with me and had great attitudes seeing this as an adventure themselves. As the shoot progressed it just kept getting better and better. My Hensel Porty strobe and it’s batteries held up great in the cold, wet conditions although they were thoroughly soaked in the process. At the end I was wet but warm from all the running around shooting. I am really happy with how these images turned out. I hope to find more adventurous families that are willing to go out in bad weather to create fun unique family portraits.

Zierlein Family: Fall Portraits With A Boulder Feel

Photographers are notorious for never having images of themselves. I go through phases where the thought of creating a self portrait of my own family makes me want to have a dental appointment just to get out of it. Don’t get me wrong, I love photographing my daughter and wife. But when I have to leave the safety of being behind the camera I get a whole new perspective on the portrait process. I see a very important need to put myself through this process because it lets me see how my clients feel and allows me to be more understanding of their perspective. It also lets me practice what I preach in that you can’t get the past back and that photography is forever. Capture these moments now or they will be lost forever.

These images are of the family of my good photography friend Brian Zierlein from Lightwriting Photography. We have become good friends since he took one of our Business of Photography Workshops that we taught in Denver a number of years ago. He is one of the special photographers that really sees the light and can create any light that is missing. We share a strong desire for quality lighting on location. Brian has done our family portrait for the last few years giving me the perspective I wrote about above. We have really enjoyed the images he has created for us and given us something I could have never done for myself. This fall it was time to return the favor and I set out to create a fun, natural, fall family portrait with a uniquely Boulder feel. We were on the tail end of the fall color but I had a great location that still had colorful leaves on the branches of the giant cottonwood trees. Shooting with friends is nice as it is a little more laid back, but it is also a lot of pressure to create something great as they are familiar with my work and I have to take it up a notch. I am very happy with the end result for the Zierlein Family. I am also looking forward to our next shoot where I will be in front of Brain’s Camera.

Chris and Leslie’s Engagement Portraits; Fall Color in Redstone, Colorado

I really love shooting in the mountains in the fall. Everything seems to come together, nice weather but interesting clouds, the trees are all dressed up with warm tones and there is an urgency to create photographs. This wonderful color is a fleeting transformation to the cold dull tones of winter. I am afraid as I write this that all of the fall color and warm days even down here in Boulder are soon to retire for another year.

Chris and Leslie got the best of my fall days photographing this year. One of those days that will have me eagerly waiting for next summer to end so I can do it all over again trying to push myself to a higher level of experience for myself and my clients, creating meaningful portraits and art in the process. Working with Chris and Leslie was so natural and relaxed although it was my first time to photograph ether of them. They have that zeal for life and each other that makes my job so easy. When I can just focus on the art of capturing emotion and let my clients be natural and relaxed as it all comes together.

Next September I will photograph Chris and Leslie’s wedding. Hopefully we will have more amazing fall color. I am already excited for the opportunity to work with them again as now I have had a glimpse at what Chris, Leslie and myself are capable of creating together.

We created the image below as a 60 inch canvas. Kathy just took it to deliver it to them in Denver. I already feel like I have lost a best friend. I’ll have to create another one just for me to enjoy. I have had this vision for this image for quite a while even making similar attempts but I feel like this is the image where it really came together and happened just as I envisioned.

The Holmes Family Portraits; Fall Color in Redstone, Colorado

It can’t be a fluke! Every time I have the opportunity to photograph the Holmes Family amazing things happen. I created a family portrait for them last year and it was a great time: we had great weather, an even better time photographing and saw a real live moose. I also created one of my top 5 personal favorite images of 2009 with them.
This year we didn’t see a moose but we did have an amazing time in Redstone, Colorado for our destination Portrait weekend. Redstone is “the Ruby of the Rockies” with red sandstone cliffs jutting up through giant aspen groves that in October are ablaze with fall color. Unlike the aspens on the front range that resemble bushes more than trees, the aspens in and around Redstone are monsters, So big that it is hard to wrap your arms around the giant trunks for even the most flexible of tree huggers. This is one of my all time favorite locations to work in during the fall. After spending a few hours in the aspen groves with the Holmes family, we headed down to the banks of the Crystal River with it’s huge red sandstone boulders that line the banks.
I walked away from this session with a very strong feeling that we had created something special again. It is so rewarding to me when the location the subjects and all the technical aspects of photography come together. I am just half of the process and working with the Holmes family brings it all together year after year.
If you like what you see here, it is not too late to create a fall family portrait. I will be chasing the fall color down the mountains for the next month into the flatlands. We are nearly at maximum capacity for this fall, so only a few more sessions are remaining. Please call right now to schedule your portrait session.

Anne comes home to Boulder for her senior portrait.

Anne lives in Japan, She is not Japanese! She moved to Japan a year ago with her parents for an exciting career opportunity. I photographed her brother a few years ago so now it was Anne’s turn. She wanted an urban look from her home town of Boulder. Shooting in Boulder is always an adventure. This night we were shooting in an ally and at one end we heard loud music and a guy on a bike passes with a huge boom-box bungeed to his bike. He passed and as we were looking through the narrow opening of the alley another bike comes by with blaring music. We were in awe as another 150+ bikes pass the mouth of the alley like the pied piper with mice following. We watched for 5 minutes as a mass of bikers rode by, Some in costumes others looking like they just got off work. I love Boulder for just these little surprises you get at random.
