Malcolm and April’s high country engagement portraits

It was a cold day in January but the sun was out and I was ready to create something fun for Malcolm and April. It was their engagement session and after a long list of potential places to shoot we decided on St. Mary’s Glacier. This is a gem of a spot with great scenery and less than a mile hike in. I think I was a little ambitious in bringing three cases of lighting and camera gear weighing in at 130ish pounds, but I wanted to make sure I had exactly what I needed. I quickly realized that I would not be able to hike this all up the mountain without some help. I devised a plan to use a snow sled to slide the heavy lighting gear up the mountain, I would carry the more fragile cameras and lenses on my back in a camera backpack. Once on the uphill grind I realized that I would not get a single break. Even if I stopped hiking the sled was still trying to pull me backwards down the mountain. If you are looking for a great cardio and leg workout, this is it.

The shoot itself was a blast! Malcolm and April were so much fun to work with. They were up for anything and came with a fun wardrobe of brimmed hats and handmade mittens knitted by April. They both vowed to return to the slopes above with there snowboards later this winter. I hope they do as that is how I am so familiar with the area. We shot well after dark using the rising full moon for added flair in the final images.

Tetons, Jackson Hole, Wyoming (Grand Teton National Park)- July 2-5    (only 6 sessions available)

The Tetons: Ahhhhh, now there is a sight. I have the most amazing locations for this year. What could be more dramatic than a portrait under the Teton’s rising above the plains at dawn?

If dawn sounds too early they are just as great at sunset. We will also be using locations along the Snake River. This was a favorite location for Ansel Adams and it will be for you as well.
Spend the day hiking, white water rafting and fly fishing on the Snake River. Don’t forget the five star amenities of Jackson Hole.
This is an old location for my landscape work but a new portrait location; you are sure to treasure this time in the Tetons. How about a family portrait from the top of the Grand Teton????  I am game if you are!

Baby Dawson’s First Year Collection

When Melissa contacted me over a year ago for maternity portraits, I was in the middle of introducing my First Year Collections.  It is such a huge honor to be entrusted to document the first year of life, and it has been a wonderful journey getting to know Melissa, Gabe and of course baby Dawson over the past year. Melissa and Gabe treasure time spent outdoors, so as I was getting to know them during their maternity portraits, it became clear that we needed to do an outdoor maternity session as well.  Melissa - you were so tough to brave the 30 degree temperatures to create some beautiful outdoor maternity images.  Less than a week later Dawson arrived.

I didn’t get my hands on Dawson until he was almost five weeks old and was surprised by how expressive and active he was.  Typically I photograph babies as soon as possible after birth and in the span of a month, it is truly amazing how much they change in such a short time.  I loved capturing his already blossoming personality!

His next session was at five months and he was already sitting up and loved standing up and bouncing with Melissa.  This was our last studio session with Dawson as everyone preferred to be outside and the beautiful summer weather was just too tempting.

Dawson’s nine month session took place in the mountains outside Boulder and it was so much fun to watch him explore the forest.  He loved picking flowers and feeling pine needles and cones.  I love the curiosity that came through in the images from this session.

I was honored when Melissa asked me to photograph Dawson’s first birthday party.  I rarely get to meet grandparents and aunt and uncles, and document the relationship of a baby with his extended family.  I loved capturing the variety of relationships that Dawson has developed in such a short amount of time.

Dawson’s final session again took place again in the mountains outside of Boulder and the entire family was so brave to venture out in freezing weather.  The session was quick because of the cold temperatures, but it is one of my favorites because the joy this family shares is so apparent in the images.

Thank you so much Melissa, Gabe and Dawson for allowing me to document the past year for your family!

There are only 7 First Year Collection’s remaining for 2010, so if you or someone you know are expecting and interested in commissioning a First Year Collection, call right away to schedule a consultation so that you don’t miss out on this fabulous experience!

Caleb loves Golf-Flatirons Golf Course, Boulder, CO

This is Caleb’s portrait session which is one session in a series of shoots documenting his whole family. I have been capturing the entire family over the last year, photographing them all separately in there own special way. This is going to end up as a Storybook telling the story of this family in 2009. We are also creating a series of custom Wall Art pieces to decorate their home.

Caleb wanted his shoot to be all about his passion for golf. He has quite a swing and I really wished I had a helmet for some of the images of him teeing off. I just hid behind my camera.

Holmes Family portrait near Vail, CO

I had a great time getting to know and photograph the Holmes Family deep in the Gore range near Vail, Colorado. It was a perfect summer evening in the mountains. I really like taking a couple or a family out to an amazing location where they have never been and capturing them enjoying a really fun and exciting environment for the first time. We are creating a custom 8 sided accordion folded holiday card for the Holmes family to share the beauty of Colorado with all their family and friends as well as an amazing collection of wall decor pieces for their home. And last but not least is a custom storybook handmade in Italy featuring all their favorite images.

A classically Colorado family portrait. This is the format of out Platt fine art wall piece. I really love this proportion for mountain portraits. It allows the environment to be shown in its full grandeur.

This is a closer image but still really works well in the Platt wall art piece. It is hard to beat summer in the Colorado high country.

Isn’t she so cute! It is easy to get images of happy kids because they really are happy and having fun: picking flowers, throwing rocks in the lake and seeing a real moose in the wild. This is way more fun for them than in a dark studio inside somewhere.

She is having a blast! I really like this setting and I think she does too. This is a great image to document the wonder and excitement of this time in her life.

This is one of my favorites. Great sense of place and family unity. I really like the dog leading the way down the trail - how typical. This is going to look great on their Christmas card as one of the main images.

Da Moose is on the loose..... This guy was grazing around the lake during our shoot. Moose in Colorado are pretty rare, I have a few go to Moose locations but this was a great surprise. It was nice of him to give me a smile for this image.
