This movie shows the two days of photography during Jesse & Linnea’s engagement session shot in Death Valley,CA compressed into 2 min 15 sec.

I think this is a fun way to see what an engagement session is like. Many of my couples don’t have any idea what to expect or what to do. No worries, I will get things started and hopefully we will get down to the essence of the relationship after the ice is broken.

This shoot was done on our 2008 Destination Portrait Trip to Death Valley, CA last March. Nether Jesse or Linnea had been to Death Valley before but they are a VERY fun and adventurous couple and took to the idea quickly.

I dreamed of photographing an engagement session in this location many years ago on one of my first visits to this area. The quality of light on this enchanting landscape is nothing short of amazing. I look forward to returning with other couples and exploring this area more. We will be back in Death Valley February 20th-28th (see previous post Destination Portrait locations 2009)

If you are interested in a destination portrait session please call right away as space is VERY limited and many of these locations book up months ahead of time.

Turn up your speakers & enjoy the show……

We were so honored when Kim and Lucas (who’s wedding we photographed in 2006) told us that they were expecting and they wanted us to photograph the entire experience from maternity through the first year. My professional photography has been entirely focused on weddings and engagements although I have found so much delight in photographing our daughter for the past five years, and was really excited about the possibility of photographing Kim and Lucas’s new addition.

When Lauren arrived, we came to her home to photograph her when she was brand new.  At 1 week, she was absolutely precious.  I couldn’t believe how tiny her fingers and toes were, and we spent the evening document every adorable tiny bit of her.  We photographed Lauren again three months later and she was smiling and had so much personality, and I couldn’t believe how much she had grown.  We are creating a book of Lauren’s first year.  Here are a few of my favorites from her first two shoots.  Enjoy!

Abby's Lama trip

Peter and I have spent most of our adult lives climbing, skiing, kayaking, Photographing and exploring the mountains of the west.  When our daughter was born four year ago, our outdoor adventures became a bit more tame and were confined to places where we could drive.  Although we have continued to climb, camp, kayak and ski, we were not able to experience the remote wilderness that fuels our soul.  This year we decided our four year old daughter, Abby, was finally ready for her first remote wilderness adventure.  Our dear friends Wynne and Tom joined us on this first adventure with our daughter and came up with the idea of bringing llamas with us to help carry some extraneous items that would make our adventure more comfortable and fun for Abby.  Throughout the process of learning about backpacking with llamas, we discovered that not only could they carry 80 pounds of equipment, but that Abby could ride them as well.

At the beginning of August we set out on a five-day, twenty mile loop in the Rawah Wilderness located between Fort Collins and Steamboat Springs, with our two rented llamas in tow.  We had carefully planed the trip so that Abby, who comfortably hikes four miles, could hike until she was tired and then ride a short distance to camp.  We really had no idea how she would fare over five days in a complete wilderness setting hiking for a majority of each day.  We shouldn’t have worried, because the farther we hiked, the more in her element she became.  She hiked, explored, played pretend, fished and loved every minute with the llamas.  We feasted on giant trout on two evenings, and enjoyed the company of moose throughout our adventure.

The llamas turned out to be delightful hiking companions who were quite nimble over rugged terrain and completely self-sufficient during our time at camp.  They had pleasant personalities (no spitting, balking, biting, etc.) and were always ready to hike.  Even more enjoyable was that they carried 30 pounds of camera equipment for us so that we could document Abby’s first backpack trip.  The entire trip was so much fun and we are thrilled to be able to share our love of the mountains with our daughter.  We look forward to many more llama adventures to come!
