Troy and Jamie’s Engagement - from lower Denver to the top of Boulder

I am really excited to get this post up on my blog! I had such a great time photographing Troy and Jamie and want the whole world to see the results. We decided that two engagement sessions were necessary to capture both their love of adventure and fun in the city. We covered a lot of ground during these two engagement shoots: from urban backdrops in the alleys of Denver to the mountain tops outside of Boulder.

For the downtown Denver shoot, we had a great time trying to create new images in a place I have photographed many times. You would think that shooting in a familiar location would be easy, but I am always pushing myself to do something new and better than before. This makes really familiar places the most challenging shoots I do. Troy and Jamie were so much fun with their acrobatic antics that this familiar location felt as exhilarating as the first time I photographed there.
Every time I photograph in a new place, I love the ideas that jump into my mind. The 1st Flatiron is a place I’ve spent a lot of time climbing over the years. The 1400 foot tall East Face used to be something I would climb before work on a nice summer morning, so I am very familiar with the route and have often thought it would be a great location for a shoot, but have never had a couple adventurous enough to make a climb like this their engagement shoot location. I was giddy at the idea once we started jokingly talking about the potential. To my surprise Troy and Jamie, being avid rock climbers, loved the idea.
A few weeks before our shoot Kathy and I went up and climbed the 1st Flatiron to look for the best camera angles and for me to see this through my photographer eye’s as opposed to my normal climbers pace. I found some great perspectives by going off the normal route up the face. This also gave me the opportunity to think about how the logistics would play out.

A few weeks later on the day of our shoot/climb it was raining buckets in the morning. We spoke on the phone and decided to go for it since Troy and Jamie had taken the day off for this shoot. An hour before we were scheduled to begin shooting, the sky cleared and the sun came out and we made the hike up to the base of the 1st Flatiron. I recruited the help of an old friend and climbing partner Chad Greedy to lead and belay me so that I could stay focused on the photography aspects and not the technicalities of climbing. This allowed me to shoot off the end of a rope and to swing across the face to get some great perspectives off the sides of the normal climbing route. Chad and I climbed above Troy and Jamie as two separate teams with me racing to the next camera position to stay ahead of the action.
At around the 500 foot mark the clouds returned and the sky opened up unleashing a powerful rain and hail storm on top of us(Click here to see video of the storm in progress). We scurried to ledges and hunkered down trying to find shelter from the pounding rain and hail. The giant face acted like a funnel with waterfalls running down the face trying to take us with them to the base of the rock. Troy was secure on a ledge but had elected to leave his rain coat behind to save weight and bulk while climbing. Jamie donned her rain coat only to find the best place to stop was in the middle of a pretty good waterfall. Chad and I hid in a gash in the rock and I jumped out every now and then to take some pictures and check to see how they were doing. After 20 minutes and two or three volleys of storms, the fierce storm seemed to pass. We all gathered on a large ledge at the half way point to assess our options.
I wouldn’t have blamed anyone if they had wanted to retreat off this climb after this storm. My camera kit was soaked but seemed to be working fine. Troy was soaked from the pounding of the rain without a coat and Jamie was damp but in great spirits. We were all a little cold but decided to keep going as this was just going to make the images just that much more interesting! Their adventurous spirit confirmed that I am going to have a great time with Jamie and Troy on this climb and at their wedding. An optimistic, charged and adventurous spirit is contagious. Upward we went! We reached the ridge of the 1st flatiron that after a couple hundred more feet of a meandering ridge the climbing terminates on the summit block. This ridge was one of the highlights of the shoot as Boulder sweeps below with trees looking like heads of broccoli and cars looking the size of ants. The weather had played itself out and we were treated to an amazing sunset with dramatic clouds over the continental divide. We rappelled off the back side of the 1st and made the hike back down to the parking lot in Boulder. It was a really fun day with great images as the result. Please take a minute and watch the movie below of Troy and Jamie’s Engagement Storybook.

Jason & Jessica’s Engagement

Spring has sprung, It’s time to get to Red Rocks! I have been photographing in and around Red Rocks park outside of Morrison, Colorado for 8+ years now. I always try to create something new and fresh when photographing in a familiar location. This gets to be more and more of a challenge than going somewhere new. Getting a new and exciting image is what this is all about for me. Pushing creativity to the next level is my goal in work and play.

Jason and Jessica have a fun, easygoing and adventurous personality. I partially joked that they were getting a workout from all the things we were doing. I can say I was, I climbed to the top of the boulders creating a cave to create an image that I an really proud of. I’d rate the climb at least 5.8 and a bit dicy in my running shoes with a $8000 camera hanging from my shoulder.

We had a great afternoon in Red Rocks, I am really looking forward to this summer and all the great images and new places I will photograph. Coming up soon is Jason and Jessica’s wedding at the top of Keystone. That will be another great day I am really looking forward to!

A sea of red rock, I call this spot the wave. It is one of my favorites at Red Rocks.

In this image I really love the layering and how Jason and Jessica become part of the landscape with lots of depth and color!

The Cave, this is new as I have never photographed in this cave before. I really like it and hope to find dozens of more angles on this spot.

180 days in Jail and $999 fine for climbing rocks at Red Rocks. Isn't this a bit excessive for climbing a rock? I had to get this image, sometimes bending the rules for a great shot is a compromise I am willing to make. I love the colors and composition of this image.

Love and swirly backgrounds....

I really liked the form from the silhouette of the Yucca plant. Then adding Jason and Jessica in a quiet moment really made this image for me. A great ending image for their book.

Bart and Patty’s whitewater kayaking engagement on Westwater!

So how do a guy who owns Golden River Sports, a kayak and fly fishing store in Golden, Colorado and a girl who is a professional kayak guide and instructor with Reniassance Adventure Guides throw an engagement party? They spend two days on the Colorado River running Westwater Canyon with all their best friends!

It was the perfect way to celebrate Bart and Patty’s engagement. This trip consisted of seven rafts, nine kayaks and twenty five people. We spent two days on the river and a night at the Little Dolores Creek confluence camping out next to the river. When I say “camp” you might think freeze dried dinners and water from canteens, but not this crowd. The pork tenderloin was hot, the beer was cold from the keg and the campfire was raging. This was living. An amazing dinner that would make many 4 star restaurants proud to have on the menu.  As the sun went down the camp fire stoked up and the party carried on into the night.

This was really fun for Kathy and I to photograph as it was more than an engagement shoot but a journey with a fun adventurous story. It was full of visual content. I loved the colors of the kayaks and rafts on the river and the people with a zeal for life. We took Bart and Patty aside once at camp and used the best natural light of the evening to create portraits that really showed their love for each other and being on the river together.  Passions really show through when you get someone into their true place of tranquility. This was really amazing to see them relax from the chaos of loading the boats at the put in to the first little riffles on the river to the larger rapids.  The further down the river we went the more they relaxed and got into just being in this beautiful remote environment.

Please watch this video to get a feel for Bart and Patty’s super fun engagement party!

Malcolm and April’s high country engagement portraits

It was a cold day in January but the sun was out and I was ready to create something fun for Malcolm and April. It was their engagement session and after a long list of potential places to shoot we decided on St. Mary’s Glacier. This is a gem of a spot with great scenery and less than a mile hike in. I think I was a little ambitious in bringing three cases of lighting and camera gear weighing in at 130ish pounds, but I wanted to make sure I had exactly what I needed. I quickly realized that I would not be able to hike this all up the mountain without some help. I devised a plan to use a snow sled to slide the heavy lighting gear up the mountain, I would carry the more fragile cameras and lenses on my back in a camera backpack. Once on the uphill grind I realized that I would not get a single break. Even if I stopped hiking the sled was still trying to pull me backwards down the mountain. If you are looking for a great cardio and leg workout, this is it.

The shoot itself was a blast! Malcolm and April were so much fun to work with. They were up for anything and came with a fun wardrobe of brimmed hats and handmade mittens knitted by April. They both vowed to return to the slopes above with there snowboards later this winter. I hope they do as that is how I am so familiar with the area. We shot well after dark using the rising full moon for added flair in the final images.
