Bart and Patty’s whitewater kayaking engagement on Westwater!

So how do a guy who owns Golden River Sports, a kayak and fly fishing store in Golden, Colorado and a girl who is a professional kayak guide and instructor with Reniassance Adventure Guides throw an engagement party? They spend two days on the Colorado River running Westwater Canyon with all their best friends!

It was the perfect way to celebrate Bart and Patty’s engagement. This trip consisted of seven rafts, nine kayaks and twenty five people. We spent two days on the river and a night at the Little Dolores Creek confluence camping out next to the river. When I say “camp” you might think freeze dried dinners and water from canteens, but not this crowd. The pork tenderloin was hot, the beer was cold from the keg and the campfire was raging. This was living. An amazing dinner that would make many 4 star restaurants proud to have on the menu.  As the sun went down the camp fire stoked up and the party carried on into the night.

This was really fun for Kathy and I to photograph as it was more than an engagement shoot but a journey with a fun adventurous story. It was full of visual content. I loved the colors of the kayaks and rafts on the river and the people with a zeal for life. We took Bart and Patty aside once at camp and used the best natural light of the evening to create portraits that really showed their love for each other and being on the river together.  Passions really show through when you get someone into their true place of tranquility. This was really amazing to see them relax from the chaos of loading the boats at the put in to the first little riffles on the river to the larger rapids.  The further down the river we went the more they relaxed and got into just being in this beautiful remote environment.

Tetons, Jackson Hole, Wyoming (Grand Teton National Park)- July 2-5    (only 6 sessions available)

The Tetons: Ahhhhh, now there is a sight. I have the most amazing locations for this year. What could be more dramatic than a portrait under the Teton’s rising above the plains at dawn?

If dawn sounds too early they are just as great at sunset. We will also be using locations along the Snake River. This was a favorite location for Ansel Adams and it will be for you as well.
Spend the day hiking, white water rafting and fly fishing on the Snake River. Don’t forget the five star amenities of Jackson Hole.
This is an old location for my landscape work but a new portrait location; you are sure to treasure this time in the Tetons. How about a family portrait from the top of the Grand Teton????  I am game if you are!

I had a great time getting to know and photograph the Holmes Family deep in the Gore range near Vail, Colorado. It was a perfect summer evening in the mountains. I really like taking a couple or a family out to an amazing location where they have never been and capturing them enjoying a really fun and exciting environment for the first time. We are creating a custom 8 sided accordion folded holiday card for the Holmes family to share the beauty of Colorado with all their family and friends as well as an amazing collection of wall decor pieces for their home. And last but not least is a custom storybook handmade in Italy featuring all their favorite images.

A classically Colorado family portrait. This is the format of out Platt fine art wall piece. I really love this proportion for mountain portraits. It allows the environment to be shown in its full grandeur.

This is a closer image but still really works well in the Platt wall art piece. It is hard to beat summer in the Colorado high country.

Isn’t she so cute! It is easy to get images of happy kids because they really are happy and having fun: picking flowers, throwing rocks in the lake and seeing a real moose in the wild. This is way more fun for them than in a dark studio inside somewhere.

She is having a blast! I really like this setting and I think she does too. This is a great image to document the wonder and excitement of this time in her life.

Playing in the deep grass.

This is one of my favorites. Great sense of place and family unity. I really like the dog leading the way down the trail - how typical. This is going to look great on their Christmas card as one of the main images.

Da Moose is on the loose..... This guy was grazing around the lake during our shoot. Moose in Colorado are pretty rare, I have a few go to Moose locations but this was a great surprise. It was nice of him to give me a smile for this image.
