Finding your true love is a beautiful thing! That is exactly what Allen and Jodi’s wedding day was all about. It was a morning wedding held at Mount Vernon Country Club. It was a beautiful ceremony filled with Native American traditions and customs. This was really interesting as it was my first Native American wedding. Ravens flew overhead as key parts of the ceremony were performed. Then a very nice brunch and reception followed.

I have wanted to photograph a wedding in Moab, Utah for quite some time. I have photographed many families, engagement couples and even post wedding trash the dress sessions in the desert but never a real wedding in one of my favorite environments. Mark is a fiend that I climbed with many years ago. He in fact taught me kayaking and I in return taught him about rock climbing. He has been living in Hawaii which is a good thing as he met Shannon there. They planned their wedding in the Utah desert as it was one of there first trips as a couple. Mark and I share the same love for the canyons and I was really pleased when they asked if I would be there photographer for their wedding at Red Cliffs Lodge just outside of Moab near Castle Valley. I really love their drive for life. As an example Shannon being a cyclist went for a long ride in the desert and Mark BASE jumped off two 250 foot rock formations the morning of their wedding day. It was no surprise that they weren’t nervous about the wedding day but just very much looking forward to having a great time with all their friends and family that had come from all over to share in the celebration. This is a place I could have photographed with them for a week or more and still have tons of creative ideas but this just means that I will be very much looking forward to the next chance I have to photograph a wedding in the Utah desert.

Neil and Virginia: A Boulder wedding on the family farm.

The weddings of 2011 just keep amazing me and Neil and Virginia’s took it up a notch. The wedding was held at Virginia’s parents home just outside of Boulder, CO. I loved the personal touches and feel of a country backyard wedding. The weather was perfect and I loved the quality of light on the Front Range in the evening as the God beams shone over the mountains from the setting sun. The ceremony featured a serenade from a local pack of Coyotes in the nearby woods. It was a nice natural touch and something I have never witnessed after the hundreds of weddings I’ve photographed. Another highlight was when the flower exchange was about to start and the flowers were missing. Virginia’s brother, and best man, ran and jumped the fence to pick two giant sunflowers so the ceremony could carry on. The day was very elegant but had a relaxed atmosphere with the cowboy boots and country wedding style. The reception was held in the family’s barn that had been transformed into the perfect reception space. Outside was a fire-pit where guests relaxed in the cool night air roasting marsh mellows and making smores. I really hope the wedding day storybook conveys how beautiful this day was. I had a great time photographing and designing these images into a storybook from Neil and Virginia’s super day!

We have just returned from photographing Mark and Shannon’s wedding at Red Cliffs Lodge near Moab, Utah. What an amazing venue for a desert wedding with all the bells and whistles! I still have lots of work ahead to get this out in the world. But in the meantime I created this movie made of every image taken at Mark & Shannon’s wedding compressed into a 1.5 minute movie. Enjoy and let me know if you like it!
