I had a great time getting to know and photograph the Holmes Family deep in the Gore range near Vail, Colorado. It was a perfect summer evening in the mountains. I really like taking a couple or a family out to an amazing location where they have never been and capturing them enjoying a really fun and exciting environment for the first time. We are creating a custom 8 sided accordion folded holiday card for the Holmes family to share the beauty of Colorado with all their family and friends as well as an amazing collection of wall decor pieces for their home. And last but not least is a custom storybook handmade in Italy featuring all their favorite images.

A classically Colorado family portrait. This is the format of out Platt fine art wall piece. I really love this proportion for mountain portraits. It allows the environment to be shown in its full grandeur.

This is a closer image but still really works well in the Platt wall art piece. It is hard to beat summer in the Colorado high country.

Isn’t she so cute! It is easy to get images of happy kids because they really are happy and having fun: picking flowers, throwing rocks in the lake and seeing a real moose in the wild. This is way more fun for them than in a dark studio inside somewhere.

She is having a blast! I really like this setting and I think she does too. This is a great image to document the wonder and excitement of this time in her life.

This is one of my favorites. Great sense of place and family unity. I really like the dog leading the way down the trail - how typical. This is going to look great on their Christmas card as one of the main images.

Da Moose is on the loose..... This guy was grazing around the lake during our shoot. Moose in Colorado are pretty rare, I have a few go to Moose locations but this was a great surprise. It was nice of him to give me a smile for this image.

Lauren – The First Year Collection

Since I joined Peter as a photographer in 2004, I have often toyed with the idea of creating a new division of Holcombe Photography capturing the transformational time of pregnancy and the first year of life. Just like a wedding, it is a time of transition that is surrounded by intense emotion and that emotion is what I love capturing in a photograph.

In 2007 we found out that one of our very favorite wedding couples, Kim and Lucas, were expecting their first child. We were so honored that they asked us to document both their pregnancy and the first year of their baby’s life. We have photographed numerous babies over the years at various stages, but had never thought about telling the story of the first year of life.

I photographed Kim early in her 8th month of pregnancy and had so much fun celebrating this time in her life, her radiant beauty and great expectations. As I talked to Kim and Lucas, and listened to what they were thinking as their due date approached, it reminded me of the wonder and anticipation that is inherent in this metamorphosis. I asked Kim and Lucas to begin keeping a journal of their experience to include with the photographs.

When Lauren arrived, I photographed her as soon as possible so I could capture that precious infancy where toes and fingers are so tiny, and she was still curled up as she was in the womb. This is such a fleeting time, and I am thrilled with the simplicity of the images and the gentle innocence this session captured.

We also photographed Lauren at 4 months, 7 months, 10 months, her fist birthday party and 12 months. As I designed Lauren’s book and began to incorporate the journal entries from Kim and Lucas, I witnessed a story unfolding that moved me to tears again and again – both Peter and I said repeatedly that we wish we had created something this special for our daughter!

Thank you Kim and Lucas for giving me the opportunity to bring to life an idea I have been cultivating for years. As a result of your trust, I am thrilled to announce the launch of a new division of Holcombe Photography: The First Year Collection specializing in telling the story of the first year. I will be accepting 10 commissions for First Year Collections in 2010.

Vian-Senior portraits with something different

This was fun. Taking a unique approach to think outside the box for a Senior portrait. This is what happens when Vian’s Mom tells me “Just go crazy and crate something funky, We don’t want him standing by a tree.”  Crazy I went with special thanks to Vian’s brother for the hand drawn city scene and cameo appearance from Taylor, Vian’s girlfriend and Holcombe Photography blog superstar!

Love the light and the texture on the metal.

Classic but not interesting enough, This is where many senior Mom's would be very comfortable and happy. But we got to push on for more!!!

Cool position and dramatic light! Now we are moving forward...

Alan & Molly- A Mountain Wedding in Vail

We had a great time photographing Alan and Molly’s Wedding last night in Vail. It was great to see so many familiar faces amongst the guests. Alan and Molly live in Hawaii currently but both lived in Colorado before trading the snow for sand.  Everything just went so well. We missed the short rain between the time I photographed Alan & Molly together alone and the ceremony. It was the perfect early fall day in the mountains, not hot, not cold but just right.

We started the day photographing in Vail Village at the covered bridge. All of Vail Village was buzzing with the weekly farmers market. We took this in stride and went to work to create uniquely vail images with Gore creek and the covered bridge. Then we were off to Donovan  Pavilion for the ceremony and reception. This is a great venue for a wedding, with a beautiful back patio for the outdoor ceremony and a spacious interior for the reception. During the ceremony surrounded by Aspen trees you could hear the trickle of Gore creek running in the background.

A really fun reception followed the ceremony with Alan’s Mom performing a Hula dance accompanied by  their friends playing Hawaiian slack key guitars. The night ended with Alan and Molly leaving with all the friends and family waiving sparklers as they left Donovan Pavilion.

Alan and Molly are off for two weeks honeymoon in Australia before returning to paradise in Hawaii.

I really like this image for the glowing nature of the light. This was a real moment as she was finishing getting ready.

Molly was a beautiful bride with a very natural and graceful presence. I was really drawn to the quality of the light coming in the window as she was getting ready. This is right before she went to meet Alan for the first encounter.

This is the first Encounter (when they saw each other for the first time on the wedding day), They both were nervous (that is normal) as we brought them together with Alan turned facing away. Then 1-2-3 turnaround and this is what happened next. Love the energy!

Vail is a great place to have a wedding. That is the covered bridge in the background.

A quiet moment. They think I am messing with my camera but I didn’t want to interrupt this moment. I just captured it as is. Many times that is best.

20090830-alen-molly_wedd-237-facebook

This is the classic covered bridge in Vail Village. Many thanks to the 40ish people waiting for us to get this image that were out of sight on both ends of the bridge. I love the depth and quality of light in this image.

Each time I photograph I really try to do something new that I have never done before. In new and familiar locations this is my challenge to myself. This is where many of the images I am excited about come from. This is one of those images, I see the power of symbolism as they walk into there new life together going from the dark into the light.

Molly peeking out as she encourages on of the flower girls as she is about to walk down the aisle. See what I mean by being Beautiful and graceful?

20090830-alen-molly_wedd-438-facebook

This was funny! I don't know if anyone noticed this but me. A flower girl getting a little gloss during the ceremony. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...

The patio at Donovan Pavilion.

A happy couple taking in there guests during the ceremony. I thought this was a nice touch by having them turn around and let them and their guests see them. So many ceremonies all the guests see it the back of the couple. Nice touch Eugene!

20090830-alen-molly_wedd-786-facebook

This might be my favorite image from the day. I LOVE brides that are willing to get in rivers barefoot in their wedding dresses. Classically colorado!

Leaving in a sea of sparklers. This is a great touch!
